The rest of the Pilgrim story.
Everyone seems to have heard the story of the Pilgrims and their arrival in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They also know that in 1621 they celebrated a day of thanks that eventually morphed into the Thanksgiving holiday.
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in December but was eventually pushed back to November after the Plymouth merchants complained that it reduced the number of shopping days until Christmas but I digress.
Everyone seems to know about the Mayflower Compact and the little commonwealth they formed. Everyone was supposed to put a portion of their crop and resources into the common pot.
What they never bothered to tell you as that for the first couple or three years they starved. The commonwealth didn't work out so well. Seems people were taking out more than they put in.
Things finally came to a head and out of desperation just before they folded up and went back to England defeated the Pilgrim fathers in desperation gave family a parcel of land and simply said they could keep everything they grew or made.
They flourished.
And that is the part of the Pilgrim story the liberals never bother to tell you.
