I’m absolutely in favor of mandatory firearms safety education. But as a condition of graduation from high school, not gun ownership. And as part of a class on safety in affairs of daily living - automobile, gun, fire (structure, forest, and grassland), water (particularly rising water), wild animals, chemical safety, substance abuse, dietary (food poisoning, general nutrition), dehydration/heatstroke/hypothermia, wtfever.
IOW, a basic class in “the world is a dangerous place; don’t be a dumb fuck.” Taught by people competent to do so.

Not only do I agree with it but it should go a bit further. It should also include basic life skills like running a credit card, managing a retirement, cooking, making a bed and basic life skills that too many people don't understand including the teachers that are currently in their classrooms teaching them.
The skills which you are speaking of should be taught by parents. We also taught our son how to apply a condom properly using a zucchini...no pregnancies or sexual diseases. Teachers are not responsible or should be for teaching basic life skills.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, maybe not but a LOT or parents don't even have the basic skills to teach their kids.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you the sex and family values. It IS the parent's job. Still, too many of them don't do it.
When I went to school we had water safety, bicycle safety, basic firearm safety, driver's ed, shop and home economics taught us. Today's kids don't know squat about eating right or they wouldn't be so damned FAT.
A school should prepare kids for LIFE and not just college.
Ok, we are the same age, and I don't remember the classes of which you speak. I only had Home Economics and Driver's Ed. Thinking school should prepare kids for life is unrealistic in this day and age. They are barely able to teach in the classrooms. PLUS, school or college is book learning and doesn't teach what your career really entails in the real world...that can't be taught except thru life experience on the job. Our society has drastically changed since our upbringing, some good some bad. It really isn't hard to learn on your own basic skills... it's called common sense. You can read books on how to parent, but until you have a child the reality of the situation remains unknown... trial and error. Isn't that what life is?
ReplyDeleteYou are pretty much spot on about being barely able to teach in the classrooms. That a major part of it I won't get into here.
ReplyDeleteWe had a very basic gun safety class of sorts, we also covered basics of water safety and bicycle safety in elementry school. In Jr high we had shop for two periods a week.
Later in HS biology we covered nutrition for a couple of days.
Granted they were not extensive courses but were enough to introduce us to things and hopefully make us aware.
