The subject of the MOH came up.

and the semantics of how it is obtained is incredible.

It is not like a merit badge so it is not earned.

It's not a race or contest so it is not won. It is what it is. It is something that is awarded for a conspicuous act or series of acts of gallantry in action. People that are awarded it are recipients of it.

It's an interesting award. It's been awarded to people that have killed numerous enemy soldiers and it has been awarded to at least three contentious objectors that have never picked up a weapon much less fired one in action. Probably the most famous CO that received it was Desmond Doss.

The youngest was Willie Johnson who was 11 when he became a recipient during the Civil War. The oldest was Douglas MacArthur who became  a recipient at 62. (MacArthur's is under questionable circumstances. Politics seems to have entered its head here. Still, MacArthur received the award.)

Audie Murphy was awarded his as a teenager and the youngest one awarded was Jackie Lucas who became the youngest at 17 to become a recipient since the Civil War.

The rules regarding the awarding of the medal are not really clear.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the U.S. government, bestowed upon individuals in the armed forces who distinguish themselves with conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of their life, above and beyond the call of duty.

That leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

This post is a result of watching a petty little stupid argument over semantics over winning, earning and so on and so forth.

I figure that the easiest way to keep the semantics people happy is to simply say that So and So is a Medal of honor recipient and leave it at that.

Some people's children!

28 May is a special day.

I got out of the army on 28 May and 8 years later when I was in Alaska I got word that my father died.

I was out fishing at the time and could go home to bury him.

Political emails

I was a SEAL. Send me money. I'm a retired Major General. Send me money.

I would rather send money to some guy that's a pissed off electrician that has 4 kids because he's not trying to cash in on a military career.

As far as I'm concerned a self employed electrician with 4 kids knows the average American better than a career soldier, ESPECIALLY a general officer.

The self employed electrician has done it the hard way and spent a lot of nights trying to pull his next job out of his ass while the career soldier was simply told what his next job was.

Something to be said here.

Another 'almost joined'.

as in I 'almost joined' the (insert service here).

What bull$hit! That clown probably never darkened the recruiter's doorstep.

'Almost joined' is like almost got pregnant. Either you did or you didn't.

If you signed your John Hancock on the line and took the oath as far as I'm concerned you joined. If you went bust on your physical or got busted up during your delayed entry time and got dropped that's OK. You joined. No shame.

I met a youngster that got injured in training and got dropped. No shame. He joined.

Over the years I have met people that have said, "No way was I going to join the army and get sent to..." (insert Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Outer Slobovia, BFE, wherever. Pick one.) No shame here. You didn't enlist. Fair enough. Your choice.

Just don't try and tell me you 'almost joined' when you never even seriously talked to a recruiter. You can't 'almost join'. You either did or you didn't and when you say you 'almost joined' you are simply making a fool of yourself when you say that.

The official definition of a veteran is basically active duty and a discharge other than dishonorable. Fair enough. What's is required for various benefits is another story.

Someone that signed their name on the dotted line and takes the oath instantly stops being an 'almost joined'. They joined.

His status as a veteran is a different thing. He may/may not be able to claim veteran status. That's a different thing altogether and is defined by law.

Still, I get sick and tired of the jerks and idiots I have met that claim to have 'almost joined'.

Over the years I have met any number of 'almost joined' types and outright draft dodgers and in general I have more respect for draft dodgers.

I had a Moroccan Uber driver yesterday

and as I usually do I ask then about Casablanca and if Rick's Café Americain is still there.

"Yeah, it's still there but Rick sold it back in '43 and went back to the States," he said. "Ilsa dumped Laszlo and they moved to Chicago."

Good answer!

I went home and decided to check online and discovered that IS a Rick's in Casablanca and it's been there for over 20 years. Apparently some American woman with a sense of humor raised money and built it.

It's kind of funny because the joke's on me. The few times I had teased Casablancans by asking them it Rick's Place is still there and they say it is.

Snarf alert.

I wish people would at least warn me before they say something outrageous.

Today I was talking to someone that told me a mutual acquaintance had remarried.

"What's she like?" I asked.

"She's got a body that belongs in the Porn Queen Hall of Fame," he replied.

I hate it when good scotch comes out of my nose.

How many of you readers have seen a number crudely tattooed on someone's wrist?

I have.

My father worked for him in the early 50s.

Later when I was older we had a chance meeting with the man and my father introduced him to me. Being summer he was in short sleeves. I noticed a tattoo on his wrist but for some reason said nothing which was amazing because I was a curious child.

Later I asked my dad. "He's Jewish," he explained. "It's a concentration camp tattoo."

"Jewish?" I asked.

"Yes he is," said dad. "He was at your christening. When I asked him to attend I could have knocked him over with a feather. He was the proudest guy I ever did see."

"He was at my christening? Don't you have to be a Catholic?"

"Not to attend the christening," Dad said. Then he laughed. "Afterwards at work he called me into the office and told me he should have warned him that Mom was Irish and you were the first of the generation. We had a good laugh over that one."

Years later when I went into the Army and came home and life had beaten him down I mentioned him. I was a new GI.

"Son, I was an angry man during and after the war until I started working for the Jewish man that attended your christening. Shortly after I started working for that man I gave it some thought. I'm glad I served."

I think maybe I'll post more about this later.

I now have pretty good eyesight following cararact surgery

in my right eye.

As things stand now I am holding off on having my left eye done because if I get the same lens in my left eye I will need reading glasses to read ad I opted for distant vision.

It's kind of weird until you realize that the eyes are only the receptors and the  brain is what sorts things out.

As it stands now with both eyes open I can read the 20/20 line on the eye chart AND read fairly fine print.

What's happening is my brain zooms in on my right eye for anything even remotely distant and my left eye zooms in on close things.

It works and that's the way I am going to keep things for as long as I can.

Lately the cat has been a pain in the ass.

which is true although ALL orange cats are a pain in the ass just because of who and what they are.

They are a mess. One really needs a sense of humor and an imagination to truly appreciate and orange neutered orange male cat.

I have a cardboard box in the living room that's on its side and after I shower I stuff my worn shorts inside the T-shirt and flip in in the box because the cat likes to lay on my worn T-shirts because he is a cat and that's what cats do.

Yesterday one of the neighbors offered me a 'cat tower' because his cat won't use it. I put it in my living room and watched Kitty come out of his box, sniff the entire thing and check it out for about 20 minutes and return to his cardboard box. Best guess is inside a week or so the cat tower is going to get the heave-ho.

Anyway, I can not sit on the Lazy Boy without the cat leaping on top of me and demanding pets because that's what orange cats do.

Of course sometimes I retaliate and when he is comfortably sleeping on the couch I roust him and chase him around for a minute or so and he immediately returns to doing what a cat does best. He goes back to sleep.

We reserve the right to serve refuse to anyone.

is a sign I saw several years ago in a diner.

Of course it was a sign spoofing one commonly seen in small businesses that read 'We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone'.

The originals slowly disappeared after the Civil Rights bill of 1964 was signed.

ssssssssddddxxxxxxxxxxtrggft 1hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh7844444444444444444444444 (cat did it)

The 'serve refuse to anyone' replaced it here and there, depending on the owner's sense of humor. Actually that was generally the sign a pretty good eatery because if they served slop the customers would raise hell or not eat there. It left the establishment open to comment.

I haven't seen one in decades but I bet that if a diner posted one leftists would screech and tell the owner that it's racist because they would think that it was one of the old 'right to refuse service to anyone'  because there is an ever increasing shortage of people with basic reading skills running around these days.

I got tired of someone being self righteous about Trump being a convicted felon.

So I replied "So was Nelson Mandela. He spent 27 years in prison."

"But that's different!"

"No it is not," I shot back. "They were both convicted in a court of law of committing a felony and both were sentenced. Mandela got life but was out in 27 and Trump got an unconditional discharge and faced no fines or jail time."

"Yeah, but yada yada yada etc. and so on and so forth." he babbled.

"Immaterial." I shot back. "Both are convicted felons."

Actually from what I have read it would take only a first-year law student to get Trump's case overturned by a higher court IF the higher court was honest. The judge and jurors all had ties of one form or another to various 'get Trump' interests. It was a kangaroo court.

In fact under the circumstances the judge AND jurors had a duty to recuse themselves which in itself may be considered a crime in itself.

AI has taken a lot of the fun out of spam phone calls.

It used to be there was a human to deal with and I could entertain myself by doing things like trying to sell them things.

The Marriot vacation callers would get a real deal on an extended car warranty and one time I actually got someone to start giving me a credit card number before he figured it out.

"0123-4567- Hey, wait a minute! You asshole! " Click.

Now it's AI voices although I did get one that was a human recently that tried to sell me a grave plot which I wasn't interested in.

I explained to her that I was being buried at sea and she grew curious and said she had never heard of that being done before. I told her it was fairly common among those that have worked on the water for their career and explained being wrapped in a weighted shroud and splash. Then I explained that there is a prayer for the burial of the dead at sea in the

She was halfway decent and when I was done she told me she'd add my number to the do not call list and actually did so.

Still, when they were people on the other end it was fun to argue with them and waste their time because turnabout's fair play.

I remember taking a call in Target once and telling the guy on the other end that he didn't get enough pu$$y and when he answered I told him "I'm 71 years old and still get more a$$ than a toilet seat in the broad's can next to the beer stand at a home game at Yankee Stadium, Sonny Boy." He told me to FO and hung up.

A woman within earshot turned purple and said I was disgusting until I told her I was talking to a telemarketer and she whipped a 180 degree change in course.

She said Telemarketers deserve what they get.

Let's take a look at Jasmine Crockett.

The woman was raised by a preacher, had an excellent high school education and got a BA degree from Rhodes College, a good school.

She later went to law school at the University of Houston and now she's in Congress acting like a stereotype 'hood mama. She could have gotten a little polish somewhere along the way and taken the high road. Instead she chose the gutter.

She's also racist as hell and probably sexist on top of that.

Her parents ought to be ashamed of themselves for raising what has turned into a guttersnipe and she ought to he thrown down the stairs of Congress.

WTF? NPR finally figured it out

Half to two thirds of gun deaths are suicide. That's not a gun problem. It's a mental health problem and some countries that have no access to firearms have higher suicide rates.

About 90% of the remainder are turf/drug/money related from the  gang culture.  Again, not a gun problem but a culture problem and the culture problem seems to be getting worse.

If the gang/drug/turf violence was eliminated we would have about the same murder rate as western Europe.

I was surprised to hear NPR (of all places) admitted it.

The Dems found immigrants they can oppose.

About 100 white South Africans arrived with more coming.

They're mostly farmers and I hope they start farming here because that's a useful field of endeavor.

Still, the left is going nuts. It's comical.

Incidentally wait until they (rightfully) refer to themselves as African-Americans.

The weather is finally starting to shape up a bit

at least for the next couple of days around here. Thank God.

Yesterday I mowed the lawn and maybe today I'll plant the usual Marigolds and spruce things up around here and maybe in the near future spray the siding with bleach and hose off the tiny spots of black mold on the east side of the house.

The sea oats I planted along the west side and along the walkway are coming in rather nicely and hopefully will continue to spread.

All in all it looks like a pretty good day.

As usual, we shall see what we shall see.

I wonder how many cops have had to deal with

"Do you know who you're talking to?"

Personally I would not last as a cop because every politician, judge, celebrity or self-appointed big shot that played that game would get whatever I could do to them under law.

Activist federal judge would go straight to the top of the target list if he ever pulled his position on me.

I've got a GENERATOR! We're SAFE now!

We've just had a pretty good power outage in my area and today at Lowe's I casually asked how fast generators are selling and one of the people said they're cleaned out and there are two trucks headed to the store loaded with presold models, probably more than half half of which are ever likely to see action.

I bought my little portable for $50 at a garage sale in a still factory sealed unopened box. I aslo grabbed a pretty heavy duty extension cord, a quart of oil and a good extension cord and a heavy duty plug, male and female on the way home. I already had some chain and a stout padlock.

When I got home the first thing I did was to go to the AC wire leading into the furnace and cut it. I installed a male end of the plug to the furnace and the female end to the feedline and put them together.

Then I tested my system and it ran the furnace with a little power to spare. My stove, hot water heater and dryer are gas fed so I had heat, hot water and a stove so all was well and I was prepared for the next outage.

I also had 3 each 5 gallon gas cans I rotated by dumping one can in the pickup every time I needed gas and refilling it when I refilled the pickup so I would have fresh gas.

A piece down the road the power went out and I grabbed the genny and put it on the back porch and chained it to the railing, gassed it up and lit her off and then hooked up the extension cord to the furnace and I was back in business.

When the power went back on I secured from operations after draining the tank and running it until it ran out of gas. Then I checked the oil and put it back in storage.

The whole operation had run flawlessly and I did again a couple of times over the years.

I am no rocket scientist, just a man with a blue collar background that has a basic understanding of how many things work. For the past 35+ years half my life has been lived using homebrewed generator supplied electricity. There are no extension cords running out to boats and we had to grow our own electricity.

Now lets take a look at Joe Suburbanite and his thrilling adventures in suburbia weathering a storm.

Bam! The power dies and Joe and family spend an uncomfortable night shivering under a pile of blankets for a day or two and Joe decides "We need a generator!" and off to Homeless Depot he goes and buys whatever the salesman recommends. Then he takes it home and parks it in his garage and if it goes unused for a year or two he sells it to someone like me for $50 at a garage sale two weeks before the next power outage.

Of course if he had kept the generator it would have done him no good because he hadn't even taken it out of the box and filled the crankcase with oil and doesn't have any gas on hand. It's off to the gas station where he stands there agape because he has just discovered the gas station doesn't have electricity either and can't run their pumps.

Back home to another night of freezing in the dark. Wife is mad at him. Kids are disappointed.

As soon as power is restored it's off to the gas station for a trio of 5 gallon cans which he dutifully fills and stores in a safe place somewhere for future use.

A year and a half later the power drops out again and Joe promptly pulls the generator out into the driveway, fills the tank and the damned thing won't start because the gasoline has gone bad and turned into varnish. In addition to not running the carburetor is now clogged.

When the dust clears Joe discovers it is out of warranty and carts it off to the small motor repair shop who take Joe's generator and put it on a growing pile of generators that also have plugged up carburetors. A month or two he takes it home and parks it in the garage.

This time he starts rotating gas through the trio of gas cans and  sure enough later that winter when an ice storm drops the wires he parks the genny in the driveway and hooks everything up. It's going to be cold that night and he actually has done some homework. Unlike many, he's figured out how to run the furnace on auxiliary power!
As the storm out side rages he and the family have the furnace warming his happy home and even have the refrigerator, a few lights and even the TV going as the generator runs happily away in the driveway.

Until things suddenly go dark and the lights and TV go dark.
Maybe it's time to refill the genny, thinks Joe and he looks out to window to see a thug toss his generator into the back of a pickup and hop in as the driver puts it into gear and the duo drive off.

With the temperature predicted to plunge into sub freezing Joe's wife calls Aunt Trudy who lives forty miles away and has power. The kids get stuffed into the family car and an hour later they're camped in Aunt Trudy's living room for a few days.

A day or two later there's a thaw. They stay an extra day or two and Joe checks his home thermostat on his cell phone app. It's 70 degrees back home and all seems good.

Back into the family sedan and homeward bound! They pull into the driveway and push the garage door opener and are met with a foot high wall of water flowing out because the pipe have frozen and burst!

A call to the insurance company and it takes weeks for the plumbers and sheet rockers to arrive. The homeowner's insurance rate goes up and Joe finally throws in the towel. He sends out his resume and takes a job in Arizona and they whole family moves. They buy a lovely house there.

A month later on a glorious Saturday morning Joe steps onto his porch and looks around to enjoy the glorious morning the Lord has given him and is overjoyed and grateful to be alive. He feels a sharp prick on his right foot and looks down.

He's been bitten on the foot by a rattlesnake.

I see where Texas

passed a school voucher law for all students.

GOOD!

I'm not going to post a long drawn out affair and describe the law itself. You can easily Google it. Still, it has certainly put the squeeze on the Texas public school system to start to shape up and fly right.

The usual naysayers are babbling that it is going to hurt the public school system and take money from it and so on and so forth but it's far more apt to force public education to improve simply by creating competition over education.

Around here we supposedly have a good education system and I hear the term prestigious North Allegheny School System thrown around a lot in this neck of the woods. Maybe it is, maybe it's not but around here I deal with teenagers that can't make change.

Public schools have held a semi-monopoly on education for too damned long. They have gotten too slack an institutionalized.

Thanks to the now disappearing Department of education they have gotten sidetracked and it looks now like social issues take precedence to the basic 3 Rs.

Private schools are a serious stretch on a family's budget and now with the voucher law enacted it will mean that a non government education can be had by virtually everyone.

A cursory search tells me that Catholic schools are a pretty good bang for the buck and that about one in five students attending Catholic schools are non Catholic. Tuition seems reasonable and a voucher will probably cover it completely.

Anyway the big thing now is that the public schools are going to have to sharpen their pencils and smarten up if they want to keep students because now there is competition in town.

I think I'll hang out at the airport this Friday

and watch all the meltdowns as people get refused boarding.

The people that are going somewhere are not going to be anywhere NEAR as interesting as the people that are trying to get back home again.

Someone is going to be screeching that they came here June 26th and now they can't go home.

A cursory Google check says Greyhound can get a person from Pittsburgh to San Francisco in 2 days and 14 hours for under $150.

I'm sure there will be at least a few meltdowns and that at least someone will say it's Trump's fault.

Fact is they have had ample warning over the past close to 20 years.

But it's only property. Insurance will cover it...

What bull$hit!

First of all the victim has to look forward to an increase in their insurance policy. That's money and time is money. The inverse also holds true. Money is time in a respect because it cost someone time to earn it.

When a thief takes a person's property he takes the victim's time along with the property he stole.

Let's run a few numbers here.

Joe Blow makes $20/hour after taxes and saves up and buys a $2000 generator which someone promptly steals. Joe Blow is out $2000 which is 100 hours of Joe's life. The thief has stolen four days and four hours of Joe's time and that 100 hours can't be replaced.

You can't hook up a wire to Joe and the victim and transfer 100 hours of the thief's lifetime back to Joe. Joe has simply had the use of 100 hours of his time on earth in effect stolen from him. Time is the one thing that can't be replaced.

When somebody steals property from someone it's not just property. They have stolen their time that they could have used to enjoy themselves or improve their lives or for what ever purpose they desired.

I had an annoying tailgater the other night.

Fortunately I was driving the Miata.

It was in a 45 zone so I held course and speed because I knew what was coming up. About a mile later the 15 mph advisory signs popped up. I slowed ever so slightly and downshifted and sorta screwed it on, holding the inside of the curves.

The tailgater was having a hard time staying in the lane and backed down after deciding that risking a head on collision wasn't a good idea. He backed off and when the road straightened out I had a good lead and continued along with my business.

Afterwards he kept a reasonable distance from me until he turned off the road.

That little car really isn't all that fast but is certainly is nimble.

I mowed the lawn a day early

after a no mow April. (to support the bees and give them a head start)

Anyway, after I was done I looked at it carefully and decided I cut it too short and will let it grow a bit taller because it will keep the moisture in the ground a little better and make the grass healthier.

Like a lot of suburbanites I used to cut it short to make it a longer period between cuttings. Now that I have time I'll just mow it a little more often.

In other news, does anyone else see the irony of this:

I think it's hilarious.

Someone critized the President for wearing his uniform blue suit to the Pope's funeral.

"Yeah. You're right," I agreed. "He should have sent John Fetterman in his place because Fetterman owns a black hoodie."

Yeah. I always tip the arresting officer. Five buck if the cuffs are not too tight

and he doesn't bang my head against the cruiser roof when he seats me."

I was listening to someone babble about the judge that got busted for trying to help an illegal alien escape. Yada yada yada so when I got a word in edgewise I said "I hope she tipped the arresting officer. I always do. Every time I get thrown in jail."

"You do?" he asked.

Yeah.  I always tip the arresting officer. Five buck if the cuffs are not too tight and he doesn't bang my head against the cruiser roof when he seats me." I answered

"Really?"

When I heard that I knew I'd found another live one.

Just an open letter regarding Holland (which became the Netherlands in 2019)

For the record, Anne Frank entered Holland legally before it was invaded by Germany. She had every right to be there. Her father, Otto, had gotten the needed visas and moved his family there in 1933 and opened two spice related businesses.

After Germany invaded they started rounding up Jews. To their shame, Holland did not protect their Jews with the same vigor that Denmark did. Out of the 140,000 Dutch Jews, about 100,000 were lost in the Holocaust. Denmark managed to save 95% of their Jews.

Personally I still often refer to the place casually as Holland and there are a pair of counties there that constitute Holland. The Dutch changed the name to bring the rest of the country to light and make it known that the country doesn't consist of just two counties. Whatever. Their country, their choice of what to name it.

In other news, the Dutch have a relationship with Suriname and periodically send troops there for jungle warfare training. One of the things they have done is gotten a Suriname amateur radio callsign, PZ5JT and use ham radio as a training tool. The American military does this also with cross band communications drills but I digress. I have worked both militaries and have the QSL cards to prove it.

Working ham pileups is excellent cost effective training for military radio operators. The have to pull callsigns consisting of letters and numbers out of chaotic pileups of babbling hams and they have to be fast and accurate. Military radio operators constantly deal with letters and numbers which makes this training, while a little unorthodox, very useful.

Back to the Franks. They moved to Holland in 1933 and in May, 1940 Germany invaded and held de facto ownership of Holland until May, 1945, five long years. Legal ownership of Holland during the war years probably created legal jurisdiction problems that most likely to some small extent continue to this day.

On release from Auschwitz-Birkenau Otto  Frank returned to Amsterdam on 3 June, 1945. His wife had died there and Anne and her sister died at Bergen-Belsen. He found that the keepers of the secret annex he had hidden in had survived the war and when he visited the secret annex that had they  had hidden in for over two years he discovered Anne's diary that he had published.

Otto never became a Dutch citizen. After the war he became a stateless person and never had a passport. In 1953 he remarried and the couple moved to Switzerland where he lived out the remainder of his life. In 1957 he went to Amsterdam and formed the Anne Frank Foundation, rescued the building the family had been hidden in from demolition. It opened as a museum in 1960 and is still open to this day.

Craftsmanship because craftsmanship.

I have finally come to the conclusion that craftsmanship is its own reward and in this day and age there are too many people that don't have even a remote clue.

I was admiring an old restored car and it was immaculate and was totally showroom quality, a relic from the 1920s. It was an incredible display of craftsmanship.

Someone came by, took a look at it, looked at me and asked why someone would have such an old car.

No mow April is almost over

which means 1 May I fire up the old Honda and start cutting the grass for another season which is fine.

No mow April is because a few of us held back cutting grass to give another neighbors bees a head start on another season.

I have a neighbor that's a beekeeper and I had heard about no mow April and ran it by him. He said it would be helpful so I mentioned it to a couple of neighbors and we decided to have a no mow April.

Hold my beer

Probably about ten years ago I was back in the old neighborhood and standing on the bridge I used to dive off watching kids do what I used to do. It was a good feeling seeing that there are still a few stouthearted souls out there that were following the footsteps of their elders.

Anyway something happened inside me and curiosity overwhelmed me. It was a hot summer day and I was wondering if I still knew how to dive off a bridge.

In a hold my beer moment I dropped my flip flops, took off my T-shirt and stood on the rail. One of the pups gave me the business about being old and I impulsively leapt and went into a perfect swan dive until I realized the tide was out and the water wasn't really very deep.

Change in plans!!!!!

I quickly changed position, arched my back and got my hands into position for a shallow dive which I executed well enough so that I only scraped bottom and survived with a few scratches on my belly.

I swam ashore, grabbed my flip flops and T-shirt, headed over to the car and sat there shaking like a leaf a few minutes and drove off, waving at the amazed kids.

Won't do that again

Making midgrade gasoline Old School style.

Midgrade is basically a simple mixture of premium and regular. Back in the day we used to make it on board by loading half a load of regular and half a load of premium. Generally it was either a 50/50 or 60/40 mixture.

Early on in my career these were a PITA because it usually involved 3 companies, the shipper the receiver and the transporter. We were the transporter.

Of course the shipper wanted to send out as little premium in the mixture to 'make specification' to save money. The receiver wanted his cargo to be on spec or greater and as a shipper I was caught in the middle.

Early on I learned to cut the regular short a few barrels and make up for the shortage with the premium and keep the percentages favorable for the  premium without making it too obvious.

You had to be pretty slick and the trick was that for a 50/50 blend you had to load 50.1% premium and 49.9% regular which would clearly 'make spec' but not be over too much to let the shipper accuse us of screwing up. When you did that you saved all of your worksheets to cover yourself.

Later on in my career the bean counters entered the fray and then all bets were off. We simply stopped doing gasoline blends because the bean counters came charging in and created problems where there were none to justify their jobs.

"People are getting more and more in debt!" screamed some liberal.

Granted a handful are simply because they are either physically or mentally incapable of finding decent employment but most underemployed people have made bad choices. Live with it.

I'm addressing the millions of people out there that have a suitable income and can't live within their means. I've done rather well looking at the big picture. I had an income that put me in the top 1% of the world which means over $53,000/year. I actually do better than that but that's neither here nor there. Relatively speaking I make more than most. I earned it without a college education.

That being said, I certainly don't live like I do. My pickup is about 16 years old and in good shape because I have taken care of it. I didn't change the oil on schedule because I could afford to. I changed it because I couldn't afford not to.

My phone as a Samsung Walmart special I paid about $125 for and my sneakers came from the same place. I'll keep the phone until the battery starts acting up and stops taking a decent charge. I take care of it and usually charge the battery to 80% to prolong its life. Occasionally I charge it to 100% if I deem it prudent.

In short I don't need a new car every few years or an $1100 iPhone every couple of years. My Android phone does everything I want it to do and does it more than well enough to suit me. The big money iPhone may have more features in it but most people never use them in the first place.

I simply buy what I need and don't worry about it. If it works I continue using it until it breaks, wears out or becomes obsolete.

On the other hand I don't buy a lot of foofuraw, either.

I really don't have a lot of sympathy for those people that go through life thinking they need all sorts of expensive stupid stuff, especially if they buy it on credit.

You live under your means.

We're in for a new Pope.

It will be interesting to see who creates the puff of white smoke.

White smoke?

Yes. White smoke. White smoke means we have a new Pope.

It comes from the olden days. A pope is elected by secret ballot by the College of Cardinals and if on the first round one is not elected the ballots are gathered and put into a stove and a cup of olive oil is added and the fire is lit. The olive oil creates black smoke. The process is repeated until a pope is elected.

When that happens the ballots are burned and no olive oil is added to the fire, creating white smoke.

Thousands of Italians would watch 24/7 for day, sometimes weeks and even months looking for the white smoke and cheer and spread the word far and wide that there is a new pope.

Nowadays not only do the usual gang of Italians watch but the news services station post a camera or three thousand there and the word goes throughout the entire planet immediately making the old gang of hewers and criers obsolete in this day and age.

Back in the day it took a few hours to find out we had a new pope. Reporters would have to be there to call in in to their radio or TV stations or wire services and then it would be on radio and TV. A lot of people would simply read it in the daily newspaper.

Now we have the internet and we can see it live, with probably a nanosecond delay.

Another day where the skies are playing with me.

A nuisance day that has the weather spinning from CAVU and T-storms. It's a nuisance because I really can't figure out what to do.

The minute I decide to garden it clouds up and looks like rain and the instant I go back in it clears up again.

Thank God it started raining and the suspense is over and done with.

================================

It's no mow April and four of our houses look like hell and will for another ten days because mowing season starts 1 May.

The reason for this is that we have a neighborhood beekeeper and holding off until May gives the bees kind of a jump start because all of the early stuff pops up in our lawns ahead of the usual flowers and stuff.

For the past 20 years or so I've been watching

the couple down the street raise a couple of sons and they've done a damned good job. He's been a damned good father which is a rare thing and she's been a damned good mother which is one hell of a lot rarer. Good mothers are priceless. They listen to their children.

The oldest wanted to enter the trades and both parents suggested a year at college to test the waters. He returned after a year and decided to enter the trades and it won't be long now before he starts his own small business.

The youngest is working at a local market as a high school senior.

They've raise the kids with a lot of love, the necessary discipline and a rare form of common sense which is unusual as hell in this day and age.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Yesterday I ran into the woman that saved my house the day of the fire. She and her daughter saw it and reported it and let the fire crew know what was going on.

She just turned 40 and for the past year or more she's walked by the house and I have failed to recognize her because she lost a lot of weight and has turned into quite an eyeful.

When we chatted she had a wonderful aura about her because she's happy with her life and is doing well. She recently remarried and he seems to be a really good guy.

This is a pretty good neighborhood.

Upgrading to Windows 11

Which is a royal pain in the ass after so many years of Windows 10.

Truth of the matter is that had they continued security updates on Windows XP I would likely still be running with it.

I really don't need a lot of computing power or fancy features. As I have posted time and again I like to keep things simple.

This computer doesn't have enough juice to run Windows 11 but the next model in the series does and is actually a duplicate to this machine, a Panasonic CF 53, MK I. The new machine is a CF 53 MK III which has enough memory to run Windows 11.

They stopped supporting it 11 years ago and I still think (that for my purposes) it was the best version of Window they made.

Since Day One I have run with rugged laptops and even though I'm retired and not dragging a laptop all over hell I've continued the habit.

After 10 years of Windows 10 habits ingrained it is going to be a pain in the a$$.

We live in a nation of panics.

The current panic in my neck of the woods is getting a Real ID before the deadline. It's hilarious because the law has only been on the books for about 20 years and in PA it's been available since March of 2019 which means the past 6 years.

I got mine a couple of years ago and was in and out of the DMV in about 20 minutes, if that. I didn't really need it and still don't because I have a TWIC card, a Merchant Mariner's Document, a passport and a passport card. Any of these suffice as a Real ID.

The thing that amuses me is the attitude that they MUST have this ID before the deadline or they're losing out on something and will never be able to get it again.

If you are not going to be able to fly in the near future you have nothing to worry about. Just let it slide for a month or so after the deadline and wander in and get one after the mob subsides.

Still, the panic of getting it before the deadline is in full swing. It's hilarious because I am getting reports of three hour and longer waits standing in line for something most people won't need in the immediate future if ever.

I guess that people don't want the feeling of being left out.

Left out of what, I don't know.

Still, an awful lot of people are in panic mode and I suppose that after May 7 the panic will subside.

Someone posted that it was unfair because he had bought tickets to leave May 3rd and return on May 10 and now his whole vacation was going to be ruined. What was he thinking? Or maybe he just wasn't thinking. Who knows? It's not like this just sneaked up on him.

Of course he's blaming the government and probably Trump for this even though the legislation was enacted about 2005 and has been put off several times.

It would be a damned shame if the guy stood up at the plate and simply admitted he screwed up.

I just read where RFKjr wants to take the poisons out of school lunches.

I recall Michelle Obama trying something along those lines and the kids didn't like it because they were all pretty content eating junk.

I had figured that would happen and I figure it's going to happen if RFKjr gets his way and I hope he does.

Give the kids solid, nutritious meals and if the kids don't eat them, fine. Many of them are just plain too fat to begin with.

Those kids that are not getting fed at home properly will gladly wolf them down.

Win/win.

For the 654the time I have had someone tell me DOGE is unconstitutional.

Here you go.

Article I, Section 9, Clause 7: No Money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law; and a regular Statement and Account of the Receipts and Expenditures of all public Money shall be published from time to time.

We have a right to know where our money is being spent.

Please note it wasn't an afterthought. It's in Article One.

Now go find a safe space somewhere and pout.

I see where the governor of PA's house got torched.

which was no great surprise whatsoever.

While I certainly do NOT condone it. It was outright wrong and the perpetrator belongs in jail for a lengthy stretch.

Still I am not surprised and I have no sympathy whatsoever for Josh Shapiro. Where was he when the left was running around vandalizing Teslas? Did he speak out once about the doxing campaign the left was pulling for years? Did he ever speak out about the rioting and arson committed by BLM?

I never heard a single peep.

That tells me he thought it was just fine by him or he would have spoken out.

What were you thinking when you kept quiet over the vandalism, looting, rioting and doxing? While we're at it, why didn't you speak out against the four counties that tried to steal the election of Dave McCormick to the Senate?

You may not realize it but you are the governor of a state that includes Democrats AND Republicans. We're ALL Pennsylvanians and none of us likes to see our property vandalized. We ALL deserve a fair shake.

Why did you not speak out? My guess is simply because it was the right that was being victimized and not your side. You probably liked seeing the wedge driven in deeper and deeper.

Your duty is to ALL Pennsylvanians, not just Democrats. Incidentally you might recall that the majority of Pennsylvanians voted for Dave McCormick and Donald Trump. What about them? Don't they deserve the same protection as anyone else?

Of course the left is going to make a big ballyhoo about your being a victim of arson but the right will correctly point out that you've tolerated vandalism against the right by not speaking out. In effect you have brought this on yourself to some extent.

Your previous silence speaks loudly. Streets are named after the attitude you have previously displayed, One Way.

Of course now you will most likely speak of the outrage now that you've had a taste of it but you get no sympathy from me. None.

I recently read a poll taken among Democrats and it said that 55% of them found the murder of a sitting, duly elected President of the United States to be acceptable to them. The doesn't speak very highly of your party. Remember, sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.

While I certainly don't advocate violence against anyone except for clear-cut cases of self-defense, I can certainly say that it's a disgrace that as governor you have not spoken out against violence and defended people's right to life and property for ALL Pennsylvanians.

While it's a damned shame that you got burned out, I am not really surprised. Maybe this will serve as a wake-up call to get you to make the politically difficult decision to stop the violence.

Voter suppression my ass!

Requiring proof of citizenship to vote is not voter suppression at all. It's just a lame excuse to hide being able to rig elections.

Most of the people that they claim are being suppressed are collecting state or federal benefits of some sort or have at least gotten driver's licenses or permit of some sort.

If they can do that they can get off their asses and go and register to vote in person.

What bull$hit!

A young man reported to me that when he meets a woman and sets up a coffee date the first thing he does is smirk and says, "By the way, I assume you were born with all of your female parts. Just trying to get things on the up and up because I don't like surprises."

He reports that it answers two questions instantly and saves time. First that she's biologically female with all the parts and just as importantly that she probably has a pretty good sense of humor.

Makes sense to me.

Back when I was dating I do believe probably I would have done the same thing under current circumstances.

One of my favorite stories I read

was how a school janitor handled the problem of young girls leaving lipstick prints on the mirror over the sinks in the bathrooms.

A teacher brought a group of girls into the girl's room and explained that it was a lot of trouble for the janitor to clean the mirrors every day and as she was speaking the janitor dipped a sponge into one of the toilets and started wiping the lipstick off of the mirrors with it.

That ended that immediately.

In fact the girls took better care of the girls room after that.

I just read where Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield

refused to put up President Trump and SecDef Pete Hegseth's picture up where it is supposed to be posted by regulation in the chain of command board.

That was stupid but the stupidity doesn't stop there.

She called an 'All Hands' meeting and told everyone that they were just going to sit things out for the next four years, assuming that everyone agreed with her politics.

What was she thinking? Was she stupid enough to think that everyone would keep quiet about the meeting? That nobody would say anything?

My guess is that some young serious minded first hitch Seaman Apprentice went straight to the JAG office and spilled the beans.

Fact is someone talked and it took JAG about ten minutes to build an airtight case on her for insubordination and probably a few other assorted charges.

She seemed to forget who her bosses were and let her stars go to her head. She also seemed to forget that she serves at the pleasure of the president. I guess she discovered that the president wasn't too please with her so she got fired.

Personally I think she should have been busted to ensign, her retirement papers refused and she should have been assigned to a tugboat in the Aleutians as a morale officer and after a couple of years after developing an incurable case of the Aleutian Stare be permitted to retire as an ensign.

To be honest the reason I guessed a Seaman Apprentice is that it would be fitting. Picture down the road listening to a sailor say, "Did I ever tell you about the time I was a Seaman Apprentice and got a Vice Admiral busted?"
