I wonder what would happen if the farmers went on strike.

I do not imaging the city folk would out and out starve but you can bet your ass the cost of a decent home cooked meal would go through the roof. It would also serve to open a few eyes.

One of the things that irks the hell out of me is that an awful lot of city folk do not have a clue as to where the very food they eat comes from. An awful lot of them probably think that meat is made in the back part of supermarkets out of something they can't figure out.

We're pretty split in this country between city folk and rural dwellers and as usual the city folk outnumber the rural folk and as a result seem to be able to tell the country folks how to run their lives.

Some time ago there was a movement of some sort to make sure that someone was at least sixteen years old before they could run the family tractor. As usual the city folk and the government have no clue as to how a family farm is run. They constantly want to apply city rules and standards on farm types. It's ridiculous.

Back in the army I saw an awful lot of country bumpkins take to basic training like they were born into it. Most of the city slickers had a considerably harder time.

Yet the city boys constantly made fun of the country boys which really made them look pretty foolish. The smart city boys kept their mouths shut and paid attention to their country cousins.

One of the things I have been a proponent of for years is universal training, and not necessarily military training. Not everyone is cut out to be a soldier.

Yanking kids fresh out of high school and sending them 1000 miles from home into an unfamiliar environment for a couple of years would do them a lot of good. We'd also benefit from having the youngsters doing constructive things around the country. For example a lot of the National Parks could use a good going over.

In fact if they had put the young people to work in the California forests the likelihood of a fire like the one they recently had would have certainly been reduced. The damage the fire caused has been attributed to poor forestry practices.

  1. If you have Netflix, you can watch a show on this very subject called “damnation” set after WW1 but prior to WW2.

Pity it only has 1 season.. :(
