Electronic shopping.

is great for known items and many generic items. Want a couple Sharpie pens? Click. A 16 oz. can of original Bush beans? Click.

How about a Moen model 8277 Commercial M-Dura utility sink faucet?

Yeah, sure if you have been able to check one out and see what you're getting. You've checked one out at a brick and mortar store and it's what you want and it's on sale on line. Same faucet, $15 less? Click.

It's when you are looking for something that you have not been able to physically check out that gets rather iffy.

While the reviews are helpful, they are not always accurate. One never knows who has been 'stuffing the ballot box' with good reviews.

Shopping blindly on line is like buying a pig in a poke. You never know what you are getting.

Then you throw China into the equation and all bets are off.

Chinese can and often do make things to specification and that's not entirely a bad deal for American consumers IF the US seller pays attention and makes sure that the Chinese are making things to specification and not slipping us junk.

I have had that happen to me with a set of brake rotors that started pulsating my brake pedal shortly after installation. While the mechanic did make it good, I put the blame on the American company that sold them to the mechanic and didn't QC them.

A couple months later I saw the mechanic and he told me that after a couple incidents like mine he's gone strictly with Raybestos brake parts. I dug a bit and some of their stuff is made in China but my guess is that the Raybestos people keep an eye on things.

Anyway, on line shopping certainly has a place in my life but I have to be damned careful about buying things I am unfamiliar with because there's a lot of junk out on the market and you can't check it out in advance.
