Ah, yes. New Year's Eve

Which to me is a useless holiday.

I gave up ringing in the new year a long time ago. I think it was about seven or eight years ago I stayed up and watched Dick Clark or whoever it was do the Times Square thing and felt kinda sleepy all New Year's Day because of it.

Fact is that it has been a long number of years since I have stayed up late for anything over the past several years unless it is at work.

Come to think of it, I generally feel pretty good on New Year's Day because I'm in bed long before the new year is rung in.

It wasn't always that way...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I read where Donald Trump said the post office was undercharging Amazon. The statement was followed by the usual outrage.

What followed the outrage is someone did the math and as usual the Donald is right. The postal people ought to be charging Amazon more money.

Haves vs have nots

I saw this picture the other day and laughed. It said an awful lot to me and spoke the truth in many ways.

Actually it isn’t just about bust size, it’s about an attitude that seems prevalent. It’s a part of the continuing battle between the haves and the have nots. It doesn't matter what we are talking bout having or not having, either.

One of the things I tend to notice is an awful lot of socialist or socialist leaning types always seem to want to take from successful people and give to the less successful because they seem to think it the fair thing to do.

My guess is that the socialistic types are either too lazy or stupid to earn their own way and are outright jealous of those that have earned nice things.

Another thing I have found by watching my peers over the years is that an awful lot of liberals are not as generous with their own money as they are with someone else’s. I’ve seen an awful lot of them cheat on their taxes or do similar things.

When I listen to liberal types grouse about taxes I am quick to point out that that the money to give someone else has to come from somewhere. That generally gets me a dirty look.

I am guilty of this. Most of us are.

It's easy to get taken in by fake news and both sides are guilty of fake news.

I do have to wonder, though, how much fake news from the conservative side is false flag from the left. There is a lot of that going around these days and both sides ought to get pounded for it.

We are getting closer and closer to a new year.

It is one holiday I tend not to go out on because it is actually a nuisance.

I suppose it has cleaned itself up a bit over the years but for decades we called it 'Amateur Night'. This is because people that thought they were serious drinkers because they would have 2 beers on the Fourth of July, a glass of wine at Thanksgiving and an egg nog on Christmas would go out on New Year's eve and tangle with a bottle of 80 proof whiskey and wonder why they woke up in the hospital after wrapping their car around a tree.

It seems to have cleaned itself up both because of the attitude of the public and the sharp increase of DUI checkpoints.

I guess in my mind the holiday has morphed from an amateur stupidity night to pretty much a blah holiday.

I suppose it's a good excuse to dump a little bourbon into egg nog but I don't even bother with that. I generally meet the new year with a snore and a fresh wake-up.

Maybe later

a busy day.

Someone sent me a list of things electronically and I was planning on printing it.

Instead I took my Kindle with me and fired it up at the store and loaded the list onto that.

Seeing the printer was acting up it saved me a lot of trouble.

I am constantly amazed at the computer age!

Today is Boxing Day in England.

It is the day that the servants that were required for Christmas festivities were given off to spend with their families.

Learn something new, didn't you?

It is Christmas Eve

and it is warm and dry which is a good thing because I am no fan of snow.

That is a VERY good thing.

Pipe dream time.

I once thought it would be nice to have two sailboats, on in Florida and one in New England. Come November the one in New England would be put in the yard and the one in Florida would be put in the water.

Reverse the process come spring.

I could just fly up to work from Florida or drive down from New England.

Actually it would not be all that expensive but the reality is that it would be somewhat of a pain in the neck.

Still, it has a certain amount of merit.

Looks like it may be a wet Christmas

Which is OK because I hate snow.

There is this product made foe breakfast called 'cereal'. You put it in a bowl and put milk on it. I just rediscovered it. It's pretty good, really.

My next project is to find a decent diet to drive my cholesterol down and start in on it. It seems that I no longer get along with Statin drugs anymore.

One of the things I wish I had known a lot earlier

was  taking a little better care of myself.

An example of this is the case of my army boots. I just junked s few pairs but kept one in case the army gets into some kind of trouble and they need the services of a beat up 66 year old man.

I replaced them with some good commercial foot wear.

When I was younger I could wander around on a steel deck all day and feel fine at the end of the day. A few years ago an on-deck watch would leave me aware that I had been on deck a while. It wasn't really pain, just a kind of tired feeling.

A shipmate turned me on to a pair of Bates and it was like walking on air.

Another thing is that I simply used to bundle up with whatever on cold days. For years an old flight jacket and several layers of zip-front hoodies served me well. To a certain extent I still layer.

I grew tired of this and decided to get myself some decent cold weather gear and that became another thing I wish I had done years earlier. I didn't 'cheap out',  either. I went with quality gear because it works quite well it lasts. Buy once, cry once.

While back in the day I was seldom truly miserable, I was never 100% comfortable. Good gear makes the difference.

Incidentally I am not a believer in insulated coveralls if you are going to be going in and out. I prefer a jacket and insulated overalls arrangement. You can take the jacket off and unzip the leg zippers when you come inside. With coveralls you either peel the whole rig off or roast when you are inside. It makes life a lot easier.

For what it's worth you also feel a little more professional in good gear. You're not running around like a bag of rags.

Good gear is about as expensive as rags when you amortize it over the years. In ways it may actually be a whole lot cheaper when you add everything up.

The deer have changed color to winter grey.

It's winter now and the deer have changed color and are now in winter grey mode. Gone are the beautiful browns and it will be this way until the weather breaks in the spring.

It's a yearly cycle and never ceases to amaze me. They turned a little late this season for some reason.

It is amazing how things like this happen because they seem to know when the weather is going to get bad and they change just before it happens.

The new TV set.

Sure the hell ain't like the old one.

Back in the day you would hook up a twin lead antenna with two screws, plug it in, turn it on and when it warmed up click the channel and watch Bugs Bunny.

This new one had all sorts of things to do to get it going and I thought I would have problems with the cable box but that sorted itself out.

An old guy like me managed to get it figured out and I got it up and running in about an hour so I'm now a happy camper.

What was a stroke of luck is it is the same brand as the old one and I didn't have to reprogram the cable company remote.

All in all pretty good.

One of the things that is a royal PITA is what happens after you buy an airline ticket or something on line.

After the sale is made they slam your inbox with ads, promotions and reduced rate trips to Graceland and Las Vegas.

I wish they would stop doing this. If I need something from them I'll call them. If not I wish they would just go away.

eBay is good for this but they seem to have learned and have managed to keep it down to a semi reasonable level.

One of the things I noticed is that PAs are becomng more and more commonpllace.

That's Physicians Assistants that I am talking about.

I first used the services of a PA in about 1980 and have appreciated them ever since. The first ones for the most part were military trained at Ft. Sam Houston. Top shelf medics most likely began the program years before that.

Some of them were real characters.

The first couple I met had recently retired from the Army and  were ideal for where I first met them. They were in Alaska and a lot of their clientele were what they had dealt with in the service, young men between the ages of about 18-45.

We were young and resilient and healed fast. The guys loved them for their no nonsense attitude and didn't mind their informal nature at all. I was once diagnosed with my PA telling me, "You got the crud."

Needless to say, there were a lot of people that were appalled to find they had no medical degrees. Other people sometimes mistook them for being former basic medics which they were certainly not by any means. They had extensive training at Ft. Sam and I know it was well over a year at the time. It's a lot more difficult now.

Even back then these men were very competent in their field. They knew how to treat most routine medical problems and equally as important when to send someone up the chain to an MD.

The medical trade took one look at these military medical people and decided they had a home in the medical business. An awful lot of things that doctors used to do didn't require all the years of medical school. The responsibilities could be pushed down safely.

Over the years it appears that the PA requirements have grown a lot more stringent and from what I have seen many of them now have specific areas of expertise.

I had no problem with the early PAs and I have no problem with the newer breed. If they are in their comfort zone they are every bit as good as a fully licensed MD. I know that if they find something out of their comfort zone they will 'kick it upstairs' in a heart beat.

Still a lot of people get all worked up when they arrive at the doctor's office with a common cold and are assigned a PA to handle it. They shouldn't feel that way. If they have something serious the PA will send their case up the chain to the appropriate specialist.

Personally I think that being treated by a PA is a good thing. It's when the PA assigns me to a specialist that scares me because it likely means I have something serious

Medicine is set up for Dilberts

They asked me if I had fallen lately and I explained to them that falls were common and I generally fall 144 times a day because I work on slippery heaving decks for a living.

The medico looked shocked and asked me about my job and yada yada yada. She seemed appalled at my job description.

I told her that if I don't do my job then she will have to walk home and freeze in the dark.

Then I explained that with the exception of the military, thaat most medicine is centered around desk workers

Yesterday I cut myself

It wasn't bad but I did bleed like a tuck pig for a moment.

Of course I patched it up with a paper towel and black tape which is a standard solution that I prefer even when the proper bandages are available.

A doctor once tried to chide me on doing that once but I pointed out that taping it tight would provide the direct pressure required to stop the bleeding and in a few hours the tape would stretch out enough not to constrict circulation.

"I suppose you're right," he admitted.

Anyway I pulled the tape off a couple of hours later and everything was sealed up nicely. Then and only then did I replace it with a bandage.

My wife laid herself open once and I treated her the same way and she was astonished at how fast the cut healed up.

I see where Judge Moore's accuser has admitted the accusations were false

This stuff is patently wrong and is getting real old old real fast.

It's long past time that something be done about it.

It is also not only a dirty trick used in the political arena, it's also pretty common in the rest of the world. I've heard that 80% of real rapes go unreported and 80% of the reported rapes are false accusations. I won't argue the percentages but the point is made.

'Swatting' is also a practice used by people to get lawfully armed citizens in trouble by people that are gun control advocates. The falsely accuse someone carrying lawfully with threatening them with their gun even though it has never left the holster.

One of the Ten Commandments reads "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." and while I am not a Bible thumper the point is made that it is a serious wrong.

The fact is that this kind of crap is getting out of hand fast and it is going to get worse until we quash it.

Cops generally don't charge people for issuing a false report over small stuff but they ought to. What's more, such a charge is fairly minor, often not even a misdemeanor.

It ought to be different. The charge of issuing a false report ought to be even with the level of the false accusation. If the false charge is a felony then the person issuing the false report should be charged with a felony level false report.

Issuing a false report with the intention of influencing an election ought to be a serious felony and accompanied with jail or prison time.

Of course as people use this vile trick to influence an election it seems to be losing its effectiveness because a lot of people have decided that Moore is not guilty of breaking any laws.

As an aside I do believe that Moore has dated younger women which means little or nothing so long as they were of legal age.

The practice was common in the south and is commonplace in other places with a pretty good reason. The man waits to marry until his career is solid. He then goes after a younger woman because she will have a longer period of fertility and will probably be able to have more children. It makes sense if a man wants a larger family.

Back on track.

I see where both Donald Trump and Judge Moore have filed some very strong lawsuits against people that have done these things to them. It's a start.

If you successfully sue the perpetrators of this evil to the point where they are living under a bridge you can bet they are not going to try that stunt again. It also serves as a warning to others.

Swatting and bringing up false charges and allegations on someone is out and out wrong. It's time to eliminate the practice through making the perps pay a very serious price.

I am watching the scandals

Going on with our government officials.

Al Franken, a person I consider dishonest since Day One has resigned. I also read where another representative has resigned and a few more have announced they will not seek re election.

I do believe this is a spin off from the (I believe) false allegations against Judge Moore. It seems to me like it started a feeding frenzy.

Some powerful men think they can get away with anything. Often they can. However, once the charges started pouring in against Judge Moore a lot of people that have been abused by other leaders have started to come forward.

The Dems and RINOs started this and it has come full circle and has bit them squarely in the ass.

People have come out and are starting to speak up.

John Conyers has resigned from the House amid accusations. He has tried to 'appoint' his son to take his place. Apparently Conyers has quite the reputation for getting grabby with women.

What is going on now is actually pretty healthy. It means that some high muckety-mucks are being cut down to size. That's always a good thing.

With any luck the feeding frenzy will turn to those that have taken money for influence. I read once where Mitch McConnell is worth considerably more than he was when he came into office.

Harry Truman once said that if a person was honest that there was no money to be made in public service. Truman left the White House poorer than he was when he got there.

I think that what is going on to some extent is that people are getting involved and are trying to help drain thee swamp.

A neighbor just asked me last night how far down the chain this would go and I laughed. "You think that Mary Jane Rottencrotch is going to come after you for poking her in the back seat of the old '57 Chevy?"

We both laughed.

"What's your net worth?" I asked.

"Not much," he confessed.

"There it is. You're not worth going after because you don't have anything to take. There is power in poverty. You can get away with a little more."

"Good point," he chuckled.

Actually this is probably how it is supposed to be in a way. We should hold our elected officials to a high standard.

As for power in poverty?

There are still legal remedies for people that get out of line and they apply to everyone, or at least should.

I was talking to a part time seasonal type

in one of the stores and referred to myself as an old man.

She said, “You're not that old.”

“I'm 66,” I replied.

“Oh,” she said. “You must be retired.”

“Nope, Still working,” I replied.

“Why are you still working?” she asked. I thought that was pretty nosy.

“Because I can't go out and get drunk and coked out at the strip clubs six or seven nights a week on Social Security. Camel cigarettes and lap dances cost money,” I replied. “I need the money to keep up the lifestyle.”

An elderly Barbara Billingsley look-alike standing nearby about like to fall over laughing. Gotta admit there are some old ladies out there that are pretty quick on the uptake. Some of them are real loose cannons.

She looked at me and said, “Still a party animal, huh? God bless you!”The amused look on her face told me she knew the score.

“Merry Christmas,” I said.
“Merry Christmas, she answered. “God bless Donald Trump for bringing back Christmas.

I have heard a lot of people say 'Merry Christmas” but this is the first besides myself to publicly attribute it to President Trump.

Idiot of the day.

I went to an arts and crafts store because I have a model airplane to out together and asked if they have any model airplane glue.

"What do you need it for?"

"Well, it's been about 50 years since I had a good glue sniffing buzz so I thought I'd huff a tube for old time's sake," I answered.

"What? What? What? That's dangerous! It's against the law!"

"Yeah, I suppose you're right. Maybe I'll just use it to put together a model airplane with my grandson," I said.

The woman behind me laughed like hell.

WHat goes around comes around.

A couple of years ago when I was still smoking I was spending a night in a hotel. I went outside for a smoke.

The door to the outside needed my key to get back in. I did have the key but took off my shoe and stuck it in the door to keep it from closing and saving me the hassle of waving my plastic key to get back in again.

Some self righteous a$$hole entering saw my shoe and kicked it out of the door after I asked him not to.

I picked up my shoe, whipped out my key and followed him in and hit him on the head a couple times with my shoe.

Some people learn and this guy gets credit for being trainable.

I was headed out to my pickup to grab something and wedged my shoe in the door.

The same jerk came in, saw my shoe in the door and accidentally let the shoe slip. He looked around, saw me and replaced the shoe so I could get in without my key.

I saw it and decided to add to my training course of life.

There was a cold beer in my cooler so I grabbed it, followed him in and handed it to him.

"Beats getting hit in the head with a shoe," I said.

He looked at me somewhat shocked and looked like a man that was treated like 'one of the guys' for the first time in his life.

You have heard me say it before.

It doesn't take much.
