Hey, Pic! Loan me five bucks!

If he was a deadbeat I'd hand him a fin.

Then a few days later when he asked me for another one I would tell him he hadn't paid me back for the five spot I'd loaned him a couple of days earlier.

Then I'd start dunning him for it and he'd start avoiding me which is what I wanted in the first place.

It was well worth a small amount just to get certain people to stay away from me.

Today I will be as busy as a bee.

I might be able to get back to this one later.

Update. I met someone local at the Texas Roadhouse that lives next to a herd of genuine Texas longhorns.

I have never seen one before in the flesh so they invited me to drop by and check them out.

I might in the very near future.

I was down to a quarter tank

and at in the Walmart parking lot ran into some guy bitching about the price of gasoline.

I pointed to my pickup and told him to help himself and that there was 2 each 7 foot lengths of 1/2 inch of vinyl hose in it. Take one of the hoses and help himself. If the hose got stuck in the tank just leave it. Hose is on me.

He looked confused.

"There's a lot of cars with Biden sickers on them," I said. "They voted for it, they can pay for it. Don't forget where you got it from."

I came out about an hour later and noticed one hose was missing, I now had a full tank AND the 5 gallon can was full!"

Cast your bread on the water and you're likely to get back poached eggs on toast.

Donald Trump

is STILL living rent free in a lot of people's heads.

I wish I could find me a way to live rent free somewhere.

Now Liz Cheney is all worked up because she got thrown out of office by someone that Trump endorsed.

Now that she's out Trump ought to send her a job application.

Why not?

Those dishes in the hotel restaurants he owns are not going to wash themselves.

Some of my other writings

  Here's a hot link.       Piccolo's butler

About 40 years ago when I was living in a camper-trailer in Kodiak I had a battery powered shortwave I would occasionally listen to the BBC on to get the news.

One time they had some sort of contest or something where the winner would get the services of a real British school-trained butler for a year.

I wrote my entry and took it to the post office where I decided at the last minute to be careful what you ask for. and tossed the application out. To this day I am 100% convinced  would have won.

Piccolo's Butler is a what probably would have been had I entered the contest.

The poor butler trainee was probably not ready to share a camper-trailer with a wildman in Alaska.

I'm fleabaggin' it.

Which is a generic sailor's term for staying in a place that rents beds.

"Hey, Joe! You fleabagging it?"

"Yeah."

"Which one?"

"Waldorf Astoria for 6 grand a night! Company's payin' for it!"

"What about you, Larry? You fleabaggin' it?"

"Yeah. Spent last night in a hot sheet joint that rented for two bucks an hour."

In short, any hotel, motel, hostel, Air BNB or what have you is referred to by sailors as a fleabag. If they rent a bed they are, in Sailorese,  a fleabag.

I recently said to someone that I was going to grab a fleabag and the great misunderstanding started.

The person that came charging in raised holy hell and set me up in a pretty good hotel. I had to listen to how I was going to get myself a fleabag and so on and so forh and what a great place I was staying in.

Being the sailor I am, I thanked them for setting me up in a pretty good fleabag.

On the other hand, I have to take a certain amount of responsibility for them being pissed off. I should have known that I was speaking another language to them.

If this ever happens again I will start my conversation off with "Thank you, June. You certainly picked me a nice hotel to stay. How are Wally and the Beav doing?"

Either that or I will start answering them in French. You want a foreign language? I'll give you one.

Recovering from a fire.

Is a nightmare.

Today the box up crew showed up and boxed up everything on the top and middle floor. I do not know when they will be back to do the basement.

I think I'll share the process.

The instant the last ember is smothered the board up crew shows up and boards up your house. Then nail the living dogsnot out of everything pretty much for security purposes. I guess in other neighborhoods houses get plundered when the fire department leaves. In my case the fire happened on a Monday and I arrived on scene Tuesday about 0730ish. I didn't break in until Wednesday.

The adjuster showed up Wednesday as did the city Fire Marshal to determine the cause. As of now it is undetermined.

The following day the insurance company's investigator showed up and did their thing and left. Over the next few days we picked a fire remediation/reconstruction company. We chose 'The company formerly known as Firedex' which is now owned by BMS-CAT.

Same crew, same team, under a new umbrella. They have a local excellent reputation and one thing to look for is a company that does remediation AND rebuild construction. It makes for a neater package.

The thing that is annoying is the chain of custody ot the money. Apparently the insurance company has to pay me. What will happen is the contraactor (former Firedex will bill the insurance company who will send ME a check to sign over to them. I wish they would just pay it directly.

Anyway, what generally happens is the contractor comes in and everything you own gets boxed up and taken to their place where it is 'desmoked', and put into storage.

The boxing up crew takes everything except for cash, expensive jewlery, firearms, ammunition, drugs, alcohol and weapons of any type. I can live with that because it makes sense.

Next the movers will come in and move practically everything, furniture and all the boxed up stuff. After that the remediation and reconstructioncrew takes over and it will be interesting to see what happens. There's quite a bit of smoke damage and that's hard to determine and I have no clue what that's going to entail.

I will keep you posted as best I can through the process.

Estimated time until I am back in busines is supposedly 3 months but as busy as they seem, it's probably at least going to be 4.

Oh, out with your daughter, huh?

There is nothing funnier than the rare times you see a grandmother and granddaughter out sharing a meal together.

Because the place was jammed up they were both eating at the bar.

I just wanted a quick beer and there was a corner big enough for me to squeeze myself in without cramping in anyone's style except for Karen on my left but I did explain to her I had a piece of mistletoe on my shirt tail. Her date snarfed. Don't know their relationship. Don't care. She either didn't know the rules or didn't like them. I wasn't crowding her.

Now on my starboard side was a collage kid and she was having dinner with her grandmother that was obviously proud of her. She was taking her granddaughter out for dinner.

Their food arrived and the granddaughter started the picking at it game while grandma started to seriously chow down. I was seriously considering grabbing a fire extinguisher because the sparks from Granny's knife and fork looked like she was going to set the place on fire.

The granddaughter picked at her meal.

There in little that is cooler to watch then an octegenarian chow down like a teenager.

One of the things old age has given me is a sense of perspective.

For example, Sophia Loren is STILL attractive as hell.

Of course most of the younger guys will disagree but you have to put it into perspective. She's 87 years old and not too many people will look even half as good as she does when they are 87 years old!

They figured it out.

Or so I have been told.

Of course, I answered, "Who? Me?"

Anyway, I used the last of the toilet paper the other day and instead of refilling the holder I placed two rolls on top of the tank where they could be grabbed by the next user of the head.

(Rule 1: Never leave a shipmate in a lurch.)

What I did to the empty roll was took a Sharpie and wrote 'Error 404. Page not found." on it and replaced it.

The Uber app is a pain in the arse

Because they are constantly sending me emails and texts for stuff I am not interested in.

I don't have food delivered and I only use it for rides to and from the airport.

I also have the Lyft app but they have been pleasantly quiet and leave me alone. I have half a mind to close my Uber account and use Lyft but I'll just suffer in silence because I need to have both to get around with.

My local Volunteer Fire deprtment

is incredible.

Volunteer Fire departments range anywhere between being as professional as their paid counterparts down to an untrained clumsy rabble. Sometimes referred to as 'a Volly' by their paid counterparts, I just discovered the hard way our locals are very well trained professionals.

I recently suffered a fire in the garage and the local departments got there quickly and managed to contain the fire to the garage. While I certainly had the rest of the house suffer varying degrees of smoke damage, the actual fire damage was restricted to the garage.

After action report.

I was out of town when I got the word and basically jumped ship and flew home. I arrived on scene the following morning to a professionally boarded up garage, front and back door. I got the OK from the insurance comapany to enter and I pried the plywood covering the back door off.

Needless to say, everything smelled like smoke. I located a flashlight and took a tour. Of course I was pretty much overwhelmed with the damage in the garage. Immediately I noticed the actual fire damage was restricted to the garage.

A tour of the garage told me these guys knew their stuff.

I am not a fireman, I am a merchant seaman and have had a couple of serious shipboard fire fighting courses under my belt and I saw what looked like they had not fought the fire from the bottom up, but from the top of the room down or maybe both ends at once. Heat rises and it becomes a battle to fight the heat and the source of the heat at the same time. Had they done it the other way around the fire would have likely have worked its way into the bedroom above the garage and taken off. I would have lost it all.

Clearly they were well trained because they minimized the damage and did a remarkable job.

I was a small town Volly about 45 years ago and the budget didn't leave much for training. We were fortunate to get training films from the state and occasionally we'd have a couple of professionals from a bigger town nearby drop in on our weekly meetings and teach us a few things.

Back then the school of thought was to simply flood the fire with water and often the water would cause more damage than the fire. Venting roofs to release hot gases was still in its infancy as was using superheated air to create steam which expands. Todays volunteer firemen are an entirely different breed and have the advantage of good training via one of the fire academies around the state. Our county level academy is in North Park. Part of the courses they give is in the classroom and part of it is hands on.

The guys that saved my home knew their stuff. They were very well trained. When you consider that they not only have families to raise it says a LOT about them as individuals and as a group. These people live in our community and are giving freely of their time back to it to make the area a safer and nicer place to live.

Some if not all of these people have taken time out of their lives to attend various fire academies and their training showed. You should carefully note that these volunteers are pretty much our friends and neighbors. These are the mechanic three doors down, the accountant two streets over, and the local businessman that closes shop and takes off running when there's a call. The come from practically all backgrounds. They include an inordinate number of military veterans.

One other thing I noticed right off is that these guys tried to minimize the damage they did. People see the damage done by firemen and wonder why they do it. There's almost always good reason. For example in a major house fire the guys chop a hole in the roof. They do that to evacuate hot gasses that can accumulate, ignite and spread the fire. (They did not do this in my case. It wasn't needed. Everything was contained in the garage.)

It's a given that the department is going to enter the house and make a search for people or animals. Living things take priority. Both my front and back doors were forcibly opened as they should have been. They were not hacked open with a clumsy axe. They were opened with a tool that forced the deadbolts through the doorjamb.  The door was locked and they simply had no choice. They did what had to be done and they did their best to minimize damage.

The other thing I noticed is when they were searching for my cat they were respectful of my personal property. I know they searched. I could tell by the little things but I knew they were simply looking for Kitty. They managed to locate him and borrowed a cat cage from a neighbor and a friend of the family took him in until I got home. As I write this from a nearby hotel the little guy is nibbling my toes and in general keeping my life interesting. He's a delightful pest.

Another thing that I noticed is that when they forcibly entered the doors the trim from the casings had flown off. When they were doing their walk throughs they carefully picked up the pieces of trim and thoughtfully put it upright next to the door.

Upon my arrival to my home I was boarded out, of course. I was on the front porch and wondered where the glass was. Surely they had to break the storm door glass to get inside. I saw the frame and no glass. Tempered glass shatters into a jillion pieces. I did see a whiskbroom and curiosity got to me. I looked in the trash can and there was the glass! These guys even swept up after themselves!

Then again when you think abut it, these guys are not big city professionals. They are our friends and neighbors.

Of course, money is always a problem in this day and age and things are the same all over. Cutbacks are always a problem. It's easy to shuffle things around and slack off on fire service. The way I see it, our local volunteer fire department manage to provide incredible service on a shoestring budget.

Remember them the next time they go asking for donations.

Final grade: World Class.

Amateurs study tactics.

Professionals study logistics.

The battle itself can probably be handled by a competent NCO.

The hard part is getting men, supplies and equipmment to the battlefield at the right time.

The actual fighting is the anticlimax. It's the intelligence and logistics that generally wins the battle before it begins.

What's happening to Donald Trump right now is outright criminal.

I was wandering by a TV in the fleabag I'm staying in and some woman commented, "He's a criminal."

I asked what specific crimes he has committed.

Crickets.

Data mining

One of the things that happens is little questions pop up on places like Facebook asking seemingly innocent questions. Most recently what year I finished high school.

They want this information for some reason or another and likely it's not for our own good. Probably for advertising.

I just got asked what years I graduated from high school and I put down 1863.

I think I will continue to do that and use 1845 as my birth year.

I bet I start getting ads for Geritol and other old people stuff.

Will keep you posted.

I got the skinny from a chick running a 3-4 year old electric car

and she reports that the batteries don't hold a very good charge anymore. She has to charge them constantly and a full charge lasts her not even 100 miles.

As usual, I wait before I jump into technology unlike the cool kids who go charging right in there.

I don't think I would like to make a transcontinental run in an electric right about now.  I think that having to charge up so often would add a lot of time to the trip.

It takes quite a while to recharge an electric and they seem to get about 300 miles per charge.

My pickup on a long haul can get about 550 miles between fill ups on the Interstate and I can be fuelsed up and back in the race in about 10 minutes.

An Uber driver running a Tesla told me the savings in fuel don't offset the cost of the car very much. Also electricity is pretty expensive in California.

When I called Uber she was sitting at a charging station and told me she took my call to the airport because she lived near it and was headed home anyway. She interrupted her charge and figured that she would not have to deadhead home. Smart cookie. Most likely she contiuned her charge when she got home.

My nephew, an IT guy seems to have it figured out pretty well and he generally has things figured out pretty good. He has both as he's married and a two car family. On top of that, the EV is charged with a solar charger which makes things more inexpensive yet. He sells his unused solar made electricity back to the power company to boot.

Well, let's see how well the brick I bought charges my cell phone.

The brick is showing a full charge and I plugged it into my cell phone.

We shall see what we shall see. The brick was charged with a solar panel.

Update: The brick is charging the phone so I guess it works even though it isn't quite as fast as a wall wart. I don't have the phone set up for quick charge because it's hard on the batteries.

The other day I wrote about setting up a 12 volt system for the house and seeing what I could do running the place off of solar power.

I think I will look into just plain running the joint off of solar.

One of the most wonderful comebacks to anti RKBA people comes

when the set their own traps. They say that posession of whatever firearms enables them to become a mass killer.

I simply point out to women is that they have everything built in to become a prostitute and watch them go off like a skyrocket. It's a double edged sword, though because I make it fair and point out that men have the equipment to become rapists. That is assuming all parties are running with OEM equipment, of course.

The cool part about it is it is indesputable. It is a cold, hard fact.

One time I told a woman that everytime she picks up a knife to cook dinner with she becomes enabled to murder her husband, children and for that matter almost everyone else.

Needless to say, she fell into a double trap when she said she would never do such a thing. I pointed out that

The thing people seem to forget is that it isn't the equipment that does the killing. It's the person.

The local Gendarmes were training for active shooters the other day and someone pointed out that if you have to call the police for one it's already too late. True story.

Needless to say the Karens flipped out over that comment.

Along came someone with a little common sense that said if the schools did what they were supposed to do and watched the kids and didn't tolerate bullies and so on that the bulk of things would not even come up. She got a like from me.

The police are for the most part reactive. You generally call a cop after something has happened or often while something is happening. Most often they simply take a report and leave. One rarely calls a cop beforehand although people have called them to report suspicious activity and that probably helps to some extent. However a lot of those calls are worthless.

A cruiser slowly driving by some suspicious character giving him the hairy eyeball will probably stop him from doing evil. At the very least it will probably take whatever dastardly deed he had planned somewhere else. Still, that's fairly uncommon. Most police calls are after the fact.

Of course this is no excuse for departments to forego any kind of reasonable training. Police should be trained.

Still, it's not the gun that kills. The gun is only a tool like a hammer or a knife. It is a hard heart that kills.

Someone asked me where I went to college.

"I didn't need college," I replied. "I embarked on a life of crime at a very early age. By Junior High school I had a first class criminal education."

The questioner looked at me wide-eyed.

This was at a rifle match and a number of policemen were there shooting as competitors. I've known them for years. Out of the corner of my eye I watched the two that overheard me try not to smirk.

Good cops are a joy to be around because they understand straight faced sarcasm.

I'm now sick and tired of the R vs W crybabies and gloaters out there.

SCOTUS threw the issue to the States and the pro choicers are screaming they lost a Constitutional right when there was never any Constitutional right to begin with.

Don't believe it? Read the directions, aka the Constitution. Read it and you will find that abortion is not mentioned there whatsoever. Therefore Amendement 10 goes into effect. It becomes a State or individual issue.

In fact neither side has anything to gloat or cry about. The decision simply means it isn't a federal issue. The Feds actually have no say in the matter either way. From a federal standpoint the pro choicers have gained a victory. The federal government has no say in the matter. In this respect the Right to Life people have taken a serious hit yet they gloat. Both sides are either bellyaching or gloating about the wrong things for the wrong reasons.

I'm not going to get into the morality or immorality of abortion here. What I am going to say is that SCOTUS, based on the Constitution, made a good call. Abortion is not in the Constitution and is therefore a state issue.

I do not know why this is but one thing Groucho Marx said still pisses women off.

Groucho is attributed to saying "A woman is only a woman but a good cigar is a smoke!"

I believe he stole it from Rudyard Kipling as it is part of a poem he wrote.

Say that within earshot of most women and the least you will get is a dirty look. If you get a smirk from a woman that hears that she is definitely worth checking out.

I wonder how much of my house I could run off of a 12 volts solar panel system.

I'd bet a lot more of it than most people think.

The Big Three I use AC for are the refrigerator, the A/C and the furnace. Those likely ought to stay on AC power.

The TV, laptops and WiFi router might take a little doing but they can most likely be set up to run on some kind of 12 volt adapter. Looking at the laptop sower supply, it says this laptop runs off of 15.6 volts. A glance at TV power supplies says about 19 volts so I imagine there's a 12 volt adapter out there for a TV also. I have not looked yet.

CPAP 12 volt adapters are out there also. I have run a CPAP off of an inverter a couple of times.

USB is USB and here are so many 12 volt to USB adapters out there that you can get them at any gas station and for about a buck or two in eBay. Twelve volt laptop adapters are also out there inexpensively.

It looks like other than the big three the rest of the place could probably easily be run on a 12 volt system. Maybe I can find a decent 12 volt refrigerator and/or a couple of 12 volt motors for the furnace and A/C. I suppose if I did that I would need a much larger battery bank and a lot more solar panels.

LED lighting would make things a little more practical. Back in the 80s I cruised a sailboat and ran it off of a 12 volt system fed by a solar panel. The running lights were incadescent and used a lot of juice so I had to be disciplined with them. Today with LEDs I could have easily run them all night.

While cruising I ALWAYS kept a radar reflector up on the mast and by night had a kerosene diopter lens lantern hanging on the aft stay after dark. It wasn't truly kosher by the Rules of the Road but it worked. If I saw anything the official running lights were turned on.

When one thinks about it, other than the Big Three a basic house doesn't really have a complex wiring system and really doesn't need a whole lot as far as things go.

Much of a house is simply lighting and a 12 volt system running on LEDs could easily replace the standard AC system. Don't believe it? Look at all the switches and what they run. I'll bet about 90% of them are light switches. I can count only two downstairs that don't run lights. One runs a garbage disposal, the other runs bathroom fan.

I would imagine one would have to be a little more disciplined with lights, turning them off when you leave a room.

Still, it could easily be done with a reasonably small batery bank.

I'm going to mull this one over a bit and if I can do it and come out even close to on top I might give it a shot.

I know a guy that ran a lights for a cabin (and a couple of other things) off of a windmill made out of an old car's generator. This was back in the 80s.

Well let's see if I get another time out from Nextdoor

Someone posted that the local departments were doing an active shooter drill which is what they should do. Cops should train for practically everything. Fair enough.

Some emotional Karen said that everyone that owned a firearm is equipt to become a mass murderer and they should be disarmed.

I pointed out that by her own reasoning she was equipt to be a prostitute and maybe her potential source of crime should be surgically removed.

We'll see if I get away with that one.

About twenty years ago something happened and I don't know what it was

that made me take a cold, hard look at myself and make a self- assessment. Maybe it was part of a mid life crisis. Who knows? Then again, who cares?

I am short at 5'6". Not particularly of a body type the Chippendales are looking for nor am I good looking enough to be a movie star. I had bad teeth at the time. Hollywood was out of the question.

I'm of slightly higher intelligence which means little. If I were average that meas 49.99999999999% of everyone else was dumber than me. I suppose it means 50.000000001% of everyone is dumber than me. That means Space-X is not knocking at my door at all hours to hire me and either is Microsoft.

I have a limited formal education, high school and a little college.

Years ago a girlfriend said, "Beautiful people don't have to do anything but stay beautiful." I am NOT one of the beautiful people'.

I do have a quick wit coupled with an awfully dry sense of humor.

I'm in a job that fits me well.

I sat down and added everything up and decided I was actually OK.

Shortly afterwards I learned to like myself and assessed a few other things. I have a job that at least keeps me interested in things, some pretty good friends and neighbors and a fairly kind and forthright nature.

After I learned to basically like myself things got a lot better.
