is the way many of them treated the troops during the Vietnam era.
Many of them were mistreated and spit on. Myself included when I got off the plane after basic training some dope that didn't get the word spit on me at Logan.
On one Hate Trump I posted "I'll bet half of you Boomers fifty years ago were spitting on the troops and calling them baby killers."
Holy go to war! That stirred up a MAJOR $hitstorm of deniers and 'almost joineds' that screeched over that one.
Now that the military is accepted it's time to bury THAT one right now!
About 10 or 15 years ago at the request of a couple members of the USMC shooting team I squeezed into my old uniform and wore it to Camp Perry. At a rest stop a very well dressed woman approached me.
She asked me if it was a Vietnam era uniform. It was. She asked me if I served in the 60ss or 70s. I told her I had.
She told me she wanted to apologize for the way she treated the troops when she was in college. I believe I posted this after it happened years ago.
I told her that I admired her not because she did something wrong but because she had the integrity to own up to it. It said a lot about her character.
Still, when I brought that one up it was interesting watching a lot of people run for cover.

Happy Veteran's Day.
Happy Veterans' Day, Pic. I spent my time in the Mekong Delta 1967-68. While I was never really abused by the draft dodgers after I came home, it is safe to say that for the most part my service was ignored by all and sundry. In fact, the only grief I got was from the 'greatest generation' vets. I got tired real fast hearing that were Uncle Sam sent us was 'not a real war'. Tell that to the mothers, wives, brothers, sisters and friends and relatives of those who came home in a bag. I guess KIA doesn't count unless you were killed in WWII.
ReplyDeleteI feel for all Korean War vets who while not being abused, are just lost in the weeds. Being ignored may be worse than being derided by the public.
To all who served all I can say is WELCOME HOME!
I know what you mean by getting crap from the WW2 guys. One exception was Capn Frank, a fisherman. He landed at Anzio as a 2LT and by Cassino he was a captain running a company! Anyway, a couple guys mouthed off at a Vietnam vet and Frank went start staring apeshit and called them out. He called them rear echelon types and said any true combat man respected the Vietnam guys. That changed a LOT of attitudes at the Legion!
ReplyDeleteA rare breed. God bless him--it would be interesting to hear some of his hidden stories.
