Amendment 2 was enacted to give the people the tools to resist a tyrannical government. Got it? We have the natural right (some say a duty) to throw out a government that gets too tyrannical.
Of course, as we not see the government is starting to get a little overbearing as evidenced by recent gun laws enacted in various places.
The truth is the Founding Fathers believed in liberty. For years Americans roared like lions for liberty. Now they bleat like sheep for safety. In actuality these days they deserve neither liberty or safety.
Liberty is a bitch. For on thing it entails permitting anyone that wants one access to firearms.
Anybody?
Yeah, anybody that isn't in jail or seriously mentally ill. If they are not in jail they deserve to have their rights like everyone else. If there is a reason they can't have their rights they should not have been released from jail.
Back in the day the Territorial prison would return a man his guns after he sentence was served.
I seriously believe that if we went back to the way it was before FDR enacted the NFA that the number non gang related gun deaths would drop. Suicides and gang violence would probably stay the same.
One thing that would probably happen is the government would be a lot slower to chip at our individual liberties.
