I tend to read in surges. I’ll beat a subject to death.

Several years ago I read a few books about the French Foreign Legion and put the books up. Since I have mentioned the Legion a couple of times in some other works I broke a couple of the books out and skimmed them.

While neither of the two authors made careers out of the Legion, one served out his full term and the other deserted. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out which of the two were the most successful in the Legion. It also is pretty easy to figure out who was the better man.

Both men served in the famed 2nd Regiment of Foreign Parachutists, otherwise known as 2eme Regiment Etranger de Parachutiste or the 2e REP. This means both served pretty much in the same outfit. It is not an apples/oranges comparison.

One guy put a lot of effort into doing well, the other simply felt sorry for himself and sluffed off.

The guy that sat down, realized he had gotten into more than he wanted, accepted it and toughed it out probably is doing well because he has integrity and is willing to work.

No telling what happened to the screw-off.

What interests me is that this seems like just another case of getting out of something just what you put into it.
