It is scary selling things on line

because of some people's expectations.

When you use words like 'serviceable' and 'adequate' they mean just that. It does not necessarily mean brand new.

CMP Garands are sold in various grades. The grades run between unissued all the way down to parade and drill use only. Rack grade is the lowest grade used to indicate the rifle is serviceable.

Yet an unissued rifle may not be 100% perfect. There may be storage dings on it or maybe mismatched wood. Unissued means the rifle had never been issued for use.

Rack grade simply means the rifle is safe to shoot.

All this is fine and dandy until someone wants more than they bargained for. They purchase, say, a service grade and expect it to be perfect and are disappointed when it isn't.

Of course when they bring it up on a shooter's board they get no sympathy. The experienced people point out that the item in question is seventy year old military surplus and has been shipped all over the country and maybe rebuilt more than once.

Most experienced Garand guys are well aware of this.

When you purchase something sight unseen you have to have realistic expectations.

I just sold a box of stuff that I had decreed as excess to my needs. It's a bunch of odds and ends I have collected over the years and simply described the stuff as being in 'pretty good shape'. Everything is at least serviceable. Some of it is new but some of it isn't. It will be interesting to see how the buyer reacts when he opens the box.

Hopefully his expectations were realistic when he bought it.
