There are an awful lot of people that do not understand Stand Your Ground type of laws.

Stand Your Ground and Castle Doctrine laws were enacted to protect people that were lawfully defending themselves and their homes from being sued by their assailant.

Over the years there have been numerous cases where criminals have been able to rob people twice. The second robbery generally takes place in court after the first robbery was unsuccessful.

My all time favorite was the burglay that was climbing around on the roof of someone's house trying to enter and fell through a skylight and got injured. Of course, that ended the burglary right away but it didn't mean he couldn't rob the poor guy in court. He sued for his injuries and won and was awarded a financial settlement which was most likely more than he would have made had the burglary been successful.

For some odd reason people didn't think that was fair.

Things like this brought on the legislation of the various laws designed to protect the honest guy.

Many people seem to believe that the SYG and CD laws are laws enabling people to shoot people for no reason. Thay most emphatically are not. They are simply designed to keep someone that lawfully defends himself from being run through the legal system and sued into poverty.

Shooting someone is a pretty grave situation. Except in very rare cases the shooter is going to spend some time in the slam until things get sorted out, even if the shooting is in the shooter's home and the shooting victim is a known thug with a record a mile long.
The law enforcement types are going to dig around and get to the bottom of things to make sure that the shooting is legitimate.

Apparently the SYG laws in Florida are designed to avoid a lot of legal misery for someone that lawfully defends him or herself. The police investigate the scene and decide if the shooting was lawful or not. If it is, the shooter is sent on his way to live with himself.

If there is any question whatsoever regarding the legality of the shoot then the shooter is most likely detained pending outcome of the investigation. If it is determined the shooter acted lawfully he is released, if not he is charged. It is as simple and as fair as that.

Most peole that watch the news on TV have most likely gotten the wrong idea of SYG and CD laws and imagine that they simply allow people to shoot whomever they want and get off with some lame excuse.

That's simply not the truth.

A liberal man is one that has not been mugged yet. A liberal female is one that has not been mugged or raped yet.

Right now women are carrying firearms in record numbers. It would be interesting to find out how many of them were at one time anti-gun liberals before they or someone they knew was mugged or attacked by a sexual predator.

A couple years back I was sitting in a Starbucks listening to a pair of women talk. One woman was thinking of arming herself. The other one looked all smug and superior and told the other woman that she had nothing to fear because she had four brothers.

I put down the papper I was reading and said to the smug woman.

"It is great to have brothers that will go out and avenge your honor." She beamed. "Of course," I continued "They will do this well after the time you have been impregnated and infected with HIV. They will do nothing whatsoever to prevent this from happening."

I then turned to the other woman and gave her the name of a pretty good self-defense handgun instructor. The woman was grateful.
