You don't hire someone and pay for their time.

You hire them and pay for the outcome.

Say you want a fence erected. You figure out how much the fence is realistically worth to you before you start shopping around and then ask for bids.

If all the bids over the price you set for yourself you self you simply do without. If they are at or under the price you accept the appropriate bid and get the job done.

When it's done it's done. If it takes them a month it takes them a month. If they do it in a single morning, they do it in a single morning. You pay the same agreed upon amount either way.

One of the biggest things I hear is "I got ripped off! It only took him an hour to make $150!"

You didn't get ripped off. You got a product at the price you were willing to pay for. If they did a good job you got your money's worth.

You're paying for a product. How long they take to produce it is their business.
