I heard someone use the term 'point blank range' the other day to indicate very close range.

The term is incorrect as they used it.

For a 7 mm Remington Magnum hunting rifle that would probably be around 367 yards for a 10 inch kill zone.

That means as far as elevation goes, if you aim in the center of the kill zone of an animal with the rifle zeroed to 300 yards the shot will fall in the kill zone.

The term comes from the military to denote the proper sight setting that will enable the shooter to hit anywhere on a human torso sized target anywhere between the muzzle and the given distance.

For the M-16/AR15 series of rifles the common setting is the 50/200 yard zero. With this setting no adjustment is needed to hit a torso sized target between the muzzle and 300 yards, probably a little more than that.
