Let the 'insulted' decide.
Some time ago the Cartoon Network got the rights to the Speedy Gonzales cartoons shelved them for being stereotypical and demeaning.
It kind of backfired because the League of United Latin American Citizens declared him to be a cultural icon and started a write in campaign to get him off the shelf and back on the air.
From what I read the Cartoon Network caved in and Speedy went back on the air where he belongs.
Many of our sports teams have been renamed because the Official Powers that Be decided that some of the team names offender a group of people, mainly Native Americans.
The handful of Native Americans I have run into and asked about this to a man have said they never felt offended by having a team named after them.
The exception to this was a college intra mural basketball team that renamed their team 'Fighting Whites' as kind of a 'See how you like it' protest over other sports team names. It backfired.
The team got fans from all over the country and promptly made well over $100,000 selling T-shirts through Cafe Press. The $100K was their cut of it. I don't believe it included the costs of the T-shirts.
I have always said 'If you don't know, then ask' and before the Powers That Be decide to do something they should just check with the people in question. Just about every group has some sort of organization representing it.
Actually there is another alternative. You name EVERY team with some kind of racial or ethnic slur. That way the nightly sports recap on the news sound like a delightful night at the race riots.
